Paul Meyer will be teaching a one-day weekend workshop that will take the photographing of people beyond just small flash and available light.

This class is for the intermediate to advanced amateur who wishes to learn to “sculpt” with studio lighting for people photography. There is so much more to lighting than just getting enough light for a correct exposure. Lighting can be used to accentuate or reduce certain facial features, slim a body and create a mood. You will learn to control light to say what YOU want to say about your subject.

In addition to softboxes and umbrellas, a number of non-traditional lighting methods will be explored. You will be introduced to a number of studio electronic flash systems and light modifiers that fit a number of budgets.

Workshop Instructor: Paul Meyer

Date: Saturday, August 10, 2013

Time: 9:00 am – 5:00pm

Location: Brooks Institute, Mason Street Campus, Santa Barbara CA 93101

Cost: $150.00 (includes lunch)

Materials Needed: DSLR with full manual capabilities, a hot shoe and flash meter.

Paul Meyer won his first photo contest when he was only nine. After graduating with honors from Brooks Institute he worked with some of the top commercial photographers in New York and Los Angeles for nearly 10 years before he returning to his alma mater to teach people photography over 23 years ago. Paul’s former students are industry leaders in fashion, wedding, glamour and editorial portraiture. Paul’s current photographic passion involves travel, nature and his family.
Anacleto Rapping has placed his passion for storytelling at the heart of every picture he has taken over a more than three-decade professional career.

As a staff photographer at the Los Angeles Times for over two decades, Rapping brought us four Presidential campaigns, five Olympic Games, three World Cup Soccer tournaments, three Academy Award shows and countless breaking news stories and sporting events. His gift for visually capturing historic moments broadened his understanding of world and national events and afforded him the chance to chronicle news events as they unfolded throughout the United States as well as in foreign locales such as South Africa, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Singapore, Guatemala, Mexico and Canada.

While at the Los Angeles Times, Rapping shared three Pulitzer Prizes for team coverage in news, and individually he received a Pulitzer nomination for his photography at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Rapping is an award-winning photojournalist who began teaching at Brooks Institute as a full-time faculty member in 2005.

Currently, Rapping teaches across the Visual Journalism curriculum including International Documentary, Portraiture, Sports Photography, Picture Story and Advanced Lighting. He also shoots freelance for editorial and commercial clients. Rapping continues to tell life’s stories, using his camera to portray the profound relationships between people and their environments. “Every time a photograph is taken, that moment becomes part of our history,” Rapping says.
