Exploring the light-NOV. - David H. Wells
11.13.2009 - 11.15.2009

Wells is the master of Light Studies and photo essays exploring the light and atmosphere in different places. Using lecture, location shooting and critique methods of instruction, Wells will teach participants how to create their own.

At the outset of Saturdays class, Wells will have already chosen specific Santa Barbara locations to photograph during the class. Prior to shooting, he'll illustrate his technique by sharing his own Light Studies and critique students previous portfolios. (Students are encouraged to bring to class at least 10-20 of their best images dealing with light and location, in either print format or as jpegs stored on removable media.)

Students will later discuss topics such as the specific issues of time of day, lens choice, the importance of the photographer's position, composition, framing, the use of lines, the use of light and dark, and location shooting .

By mid-afternoon, students will shoot for several hours on location to capture the best afternoon light. Wells will offer one-on-one mentoring with each student during the off-site shoot.

Sunday morning and midday will be devoted to critique of Saturdays work. Wells will also address business practice basics (including copyright and model releases) and will share a detailed photography resource list highlighting available publication, exhibition and funding opportunities.
