Led by San Francisco-based fashion photographer Jason Madara, this workshop focuses on lighting techniques used in contemporary fashion, beauty, and portraiture photography. Combining lecture and hands-on demonstration, students will explore lighting techniques in the studio and on location, all based on one light source. Saturdays content is dedicated to three types of studio lighting: soft box, hard light, and umbrella, while Sunday covers flash on location, open shade, backlight and direct light.

Different models will be available for each day of shooting, enabling students to also learn how make-up techniques and lighting set-ups affect the image and overall outcome.

Last year, this workshop sold out one month in advance. Early enrollment is encouraged.

About the Instructor:
Jason Madara's work can be startlingly raw and real or ephemerally beautiful, often at the same time. His portraits of known personalities and regular people communicate the loneliness and solitariness of being human in the modern world. Even when decoratively detailed, the environments in which he places his subjects seem somehow abandoned, and the people, no more important that their environments, seem as forgotten as the rooms they inhabit.

After extensive traveling and trying to decide where to finally unpack his bags, Jason moved to San Francisco in 2000. Eight years later he can be found either on the local golf course, hanging out with the loves of his life ( his wife, and newborn daughter) or photographing the people, places and things around him. His work has most recently been published in Cookie, Surface, Zink, Esquire, Blackbook, Readymade, Dwell and The New York Times Magazine His advertising clients include, Microsoft, HP. Sprint and Seagate to name a few.
