Capturing and Seeing the Light
Whether you are photographing your own child, an Indian holy man, a Chinese farmer, a circus clown, a Korean business man or a Buddhist monk, photographers are confronted with a similar task: how to draw and capture the response from people which reveals their character rather than merely shows what they look like. The idea that good photographs report and great photographs reveal is among the core premises of this two day workshop.
During the first day of this workshop Rob Winner will demonstrate and students will explore the beauty of natural lighting environments, indoors and out. Students will gain an understanding of why and how to modify light to create better natural light portraits of people in their environment. In addition to this Rob will cover RAW file basics and demonstrate how the use of Adobe Bridge and Camera RAW can streamline your ability to manipulate, organize, and backup your images.
On the second day Paul Liebhardt will explore the concept of “vision”. The art of seeing IS the art of photography. For photographers the question is not what they look at but what they see. Paul will begin with reviewing the photographs that students made the first day. Following this he will cover concepts such as posed vs. unopposed photographs, found vs. arranged or directed photographs, photographing people in everyday life situations—at work, at play, at home, while worshiping etc. Key photographic elements such as light, design, composition and the concept of “color event” will be the emphasis of the second day.
Students taking this workshop should have a basic understanding of their camera’s controls, i.e., f/stops, shutter speeds, and use of manual exposure modes. Suggested equipment for the workshop is a digital SLR camera and tripod. All other lighting equipment will be demonstrated and provided.
