Lighting for Portraiture Photography
Shed some light on your portraits by taking this interactive seminar, which will help you master the art of subject lighting.
Learn various lighting techniques using tungsten and strobe light, discussing how to light faces in contrast to figures, and exploring separate settings like studio, on-location, and outdoor (emphasis will be placed on studio lighting).
In-depth topics include the following:
- Lighting foreground/background elements - One-light and multiple-lighting setups - Light exposure for controlled, yet creative results - Light manipulation techniques - Contrast and diffused light usage - Accessory usage (flash meters, reflectors, grids, soft boxes, etc.) - Lighting ratio theory and practice
This workshop includes discussions, demonstrations, and participants photographing a model in the studio and in outdoor situations with and without flash.
About the Instructor
Harvey Stein is well known for photographing people in the studio, on location, and on the streets. Recognized as a dedicated teacher, Stein has taught at most of the major workshops in the United States and more than a dozen workshops in Europe and Mexico. Currently, he teaches at the International Center of Photography. He is a former instructor of the following institutions: the New School University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Drew University, Bridgeport University, and Jersey City State College.
Stein has had more than 70 one-person exhibits and has participated in more than 135 group shows. His photographs have been published in such periodicals as The New Yorker, Time, Life, Esquire, Smithsonian, The New York Times, Reader's Digest, Glamour, Forbes, Psychology Today, Playboy, Connoisseur, People, and many more.
His photographs are in more than 45 public collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and The New Orleans Museum of Art. He has also published several books most recently, Movimento: Glimpses of Italian Street Life, which represents 10 years of photographing in Italy.

This workshop is designed for photographers with some lighting experience, but who want to improve their ability to photograph subjects in controlled lighting conditions and who desire to create meaningful and technically proficient portraits.
